High blood pressure
High blood pressure (hypertension, arterial blood pressure, ABP) – higher than 140/90 mm Hg. Hypertension is not curable, however it can be controlled.
Symptoms:
- Dizziness, headache (especially in the occipital area).
- Blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg.
- Palpitations.
- Usually does not cause any symptoms, especially during the initial stages.
Not correctable risk factors:
- Heredity. If parent have been suffering from this disease, their children have higher risk of hypertension.
- Age. The blood pressure increases with age due to reduced elasticity of blood vessels.
- Gender. Arterial hypertension is less often diagnosed in females before reaching the age of 60 year old.
Not correctable risk factors:
- Obesity.
- Increased blood cholesterol levels.
- Smoking.
- Alcohol consumption.
- Low physical activity.
- High salt level in the food.
Hypertension treatment:
- Non-medical – applied in the early stages of the disease. Life-style correction – obesity, nutrition, physical activity, etc.
- Medical treatment – continuous treatment with medicines is applied, correction of life style is implemented.
- In patients to whom medical blood pressure correction fails, renal denervation procedures can be applied. This treatment method is minimally invasive and allows to reach good results.
Complications, sequels:
- Heart rhythm disorders: palpitations, atrial fibrillation.
- Danger of angina pectoris, infarction.
- Faster progression of coronary heart disease, cerebral atherosclerosis, atherosclerosis of renal arteries, renal impairment.
Physician cardiologist advices:
- Do not exercise self-treatment as you may harm yourself.
- Be aware about your blood pressure and monitor its changes during the treatment.
- Do not wait, treat your hypertension straight away. If untreated for more than two years, the disease increases risk of complications.
- Take regularly the prescribed medicines as instructed by the doctor.
